What is a Youth Council?

Blaby District Youth Council will give a voice to young people which will be listened to by local government, businesses and young peoples’ service providers. It provides an opportunity for young people to become involved in the democratic process and take real, positive action within their local community. This is the first year of the Youth Council so the young people who get involved now will also be able to assist the Council in developing its role.

What will Blaby District Youth Council do?

The Youth Council will voice the issues on behalf of the young people of Blaby District and provide a link between the young people, decision makers and service providers. The Youth Council has been allocated a budget to fund youth projects for young people in the district. The Youth Council will also work in partnership with the Members of the Council to highlight and campaign on issues which are important to local people.

How long are the Youth Councillors elected for?

The Youth Councillors are elected for 2 years from May 2009.

How much time would I need to dedicate to this role?

There will be monthly meetings of the Youth Council and if you get involved in specific areas of work/projects you may need to attend additional meetings.
